It is often said that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. That journey will never be completed without taking that first step. My first step is writing this blog entry.
The journey of a thousand miles I’ve long wanted to complete is to have a valuable blog. I have written many posts for the blog, but I have published only a handful. I heard a statistic some time ago, that each blog post should be, at least, a thousand words in length.
I’m wondering if that metric of a thousand word post is causing me to publish less rather than more. Perhaps, I need to adjust the pace.
In late October of this year, I started tracking how many words I was writing on a daily basis. I’ve reached the point where I’m averaging around two thousand words a day. Not bad. The problem is while I write a lot per day, I publish very little.
I want the blog to be well written and to provide significant value.
I have high standards. Sometimes, those standards are helpful. Sometimes, though, they get in the way.
If I’m not making the progress I desire to make, then I need to reassess what it is I am doing. Rather than continually beat my head against the wall hoping for different results. I need to play with the parameters to see if I can accomplish my desire.
One way I am playing with that idea is by focusing on a shorter amount of content to publish. A shorter amount at a higher frequency. If I could publish daily then that would be a major accomplishment and a step in the right direction. It doesn’t need to be anything earth shattering.
All it needs to be is a simple thought. Hopefully, well expressed.
As I build up the habit, I will make progress towards milestones.
A hundred days of publishing a blog post would be a major milestone. Today is simply the first step.
